The Island of Capri - Italy

The island of Capri is just off the coast of Naples and Salerno in southern part of Italy on its west coast. The beautiful island lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrento Peninsula. Caesar Augustus or Octavian, the first emperor of Roman Empire, discovered Capri in 29 BC. However, his successor Tiberius developed the island, starting with 12 luxurious villas.

Naples International Airport or Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli serves southern Italian region of Campania. You can also get to Naples from anywhere in Italy or European Union by high speed rail. Italy has well connected high-speed, international, regional and intercity trains. Italian train operators are Trenitalia, Italo, Thello.

The best way to get to Capri is by sea in large fast ferries from Naples or Sorrento. 30 minutes ferry ride from Sorrento or 45 minutes ferry ride from Naples. We preferred the ferry from Naples, since there were quite a few options and had late returning ones too. There are 3 options for boat. Slow ferry, fast ferry and super-fast Hydrofoil. You can choose what suits your needs time & moneywise. 3-4 days are recommended to visit Capri! Anacapri to enjoy this gem but if you are pressed for time, try to spend one whole day there. Visiting Capri is an expensive affair but all well worth it. You will see & feel it, when you visit.

The Island of Capri has two towns, Capri on the sea level and the quieter Anacapri high on the slopes of Mount Solaro.

Capri: When you arrive at Marina Grande, there are lots of small cafes on waterside to start your day. These cafes serve delicious vegetarian and vegan food which goes along very well with red or white wine. The island surely is touristy but who would not want to be in this heavenly piece of trap. There are private boats & boat tours which can take you around the island and also to Blue Grotto.

Blue Grotto or Grotta Azzurra once said to be home of witches & monsters is a very popular sea cave to visit. One cannot visit the grotto on their own. You can take a boat to the mouth of Blue grotto, from there you must take a very small boat to enter the cave. Narrow mouth of the cave makes you duck all the way while they take you inside. Boats can only pass through during low tide and calm seas. The sunlight comes from one entrance which shines through the sea water and creates magical blue illumination.

There are other stunning caves and sites you can see during your boat ride.

Anacapri: Quieter and peaceful part of Capri with walking and hiking trails. No beaches and quite a few B & B’s. It's about 3 kms from Capri to Anacapri. Public buses are available, and they run every 15 minutes approx. You can walk around there and when ready, take the chairlift to go up to Monte Solaro. The Chairlift accommodates one person and takes about 15 minutes to reach the top and has breathtaking 360* Panoramic views of Capri. The views on top are just fantastic. You can spend some time walking around taking it all in ... Aaah! the views, the peacefulness! There is a small café on top where you can get a small snack and coffee or tea. The open-air terrace is where you can have your coffee with million-dollar views.

TIP – The most important is to spend as much time as you can!! LOL!! Of course, duh!!

TIP – There is almost always a long wait to enter Blue Grotto. Take water, small snack & sunscreen with you.

TIP – Even if long lines for the chairlift, the views going up and after reaching are just stunning. Go there!
